Why halogen, not LED
An LED bulb turns almost all its energy into light. A halogen bulb turns most of it into heat, and heat is exactly what a candle warmer needs: the bulb acts like a tiny, silent radiator aimed at the top of your candle. Swap in an LED and you get a nice reading lamp that will never melt a gram of wax.
What to look for when buying a replacement
- Base: GU10, the twist-and-lock two-pin base. It clicks in with a quarter turn.
- Technology: halogen. The packaging must say halogen, not LED, not “halogen look”.
- Wattage: 50W is the standard for a full, fast melt. 35W works but melts slower and softer, which some people actually prefer for bedrooms.
- Beam and glass: any standard GU10 reflector works. Clear glass gives the prettiest sparkle through a glass shade.
How long a bulb lasts
| Usage pattern | Bulb lifespan (approx.) |
|---|---|
| 2 hours per evening (timer) | 2+ years |
| 4 hours per evening | about 1 year |
| 8 hours daily | 6 to 8 months |
Dimming below full power extends bulb life further. The 2/4/8-hour auto-off timer on the Hearthglow lamp is the single biggest lifespan saver, because the bulb never runs all night by accident.
Changing the bulb safely
- Switch the lamp off, unplug it, and let the bulb cool for 10 minutes. Halogen runs hot: that is its job.
- Press the bulb gently and twist a quarter turn counterclockwise.
- Hold the new bulb with a cloth or its packaging (skin oils shorten halogen life), insert and twist clockwise until it locks.
Bulb questions, answered
Are the bulbs included with Hearthglow lamps?
Yes. Both the classic lamp and the Crystal ship with two 50W GU10 halogen bulbs: one installed, one spare.
My new bulb does not melt wax. Why?
Check the packaging: nine times out of ten it is an LED GU10. Only halogen produces melting heat. Our troubleshooting guide covers the other causes.
Is a hot bulb dangerous?
The bulb sits inside the shade, above the candle, away from hands and fabric. There is still no open flame anywhere, and the timer shuts everything down on schedule. If a bulb or socket ever fails within 90 days, the Glow Guarantee replaces the lamp free.
Light it. Love it. Never burn it.
